Obsession is a strong, unrelenting drive.   A preoccupation with anything in a person's life that takes his or her mind off of God, is an obsession. The obsession goes beyond all reasonable levels of emotions or ideas. It becomes a compulsion to act upon the lies of Satan to an illogical behavior, action or service.

The "exception" to this train of thought, is in the life and walk of a Christian in the ministry service of the Lord.  A person dedicated to the Lordís work will have their minds focused on following Jesus and His Word. This is the Lord's will, to love one another and serve the Lord.

A harmful obsession comes through sinful thoughts and actions. Satanís stomping ground! When people get their minds and hearts off of the Word they again open up the door for Satan to enter in.  Letís take unforgiveness for our example:  What better place to start than an area where everyone has to deal with.

When you hurt someone intentionally or unintentionally, then it's your job to say you're sorry, and try to make up for the harm that you have caused that person.  Godís teachings tell you to do this.

On the other hand when someone hurts you, this gives you a choice to make, to forgive or have unforgiveness.  You either totally forgive that person, or you let unforgiveness fester within you to a level of growing hate.  Everyone has this choice, over and over again throughout their life time.  Every time that this happens Satan is right there to tempt and confuse you with his lies and deceits.

I John 4:20-21  "If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can be love God whom he hath not seen? And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also."

Manís sinful carnal nature wants to hold grudges and hate.  His sinful carnal nature wants to walk in unforgiveness.  Get even with that person in an evil sinful way. Satan pushes and prods people through their carnal man until he acts upon those thoughts of hate to the point of obsession. People need help through the prayers of other fellow Christians and Pastors.  When obsession takes over their lives they canít fight it alone but need to seek God's help.

Forgiveness comes through, and by, God given faith.  When you praise God for that person and ask the Lord to help them, you have forgiveness in your heart. You pray for a good life for them, and lift them up despite of what they have done. As the Lord's prayer says, "Forgive us, our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us." We must forgive, because God forgives us.

Luke 6:37 reads, "Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:"

Ephesians 4:32 reads, "And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christís sake hath forgiven you."

Sometimes you need to go up to that person or write them a letter asking them to forgive you for holding unforgiveness towards them.  Not pointing fingers and reminding them of what they have done to you, but asking for their forgiveness of "your sin" of "unforgiveness towards them."

Does this hurt your pride?  Why hold unforgiveness to a point that it festers, and becomes an obsession? Why should it matter when you get the reward of heaven?  Remember the Lord forgave you of all of your sins. Who are you to hold unforgiveness towards another person? Look at the sins that you have. Now, be honest and take a good look at them.  How many times do you offend others yourself? How many times are you aware of the hurts that you cause to others.  If you want Jesus to forgive you, you have to forgive others yourself.

Other types of obsession and preoccupation are Cigarette smoking, Drinking Alcohol, Drug Addiction, Fortune Telling, Horoscopes, Witch Craft,  ect.  People can be obsessed and preoccupied with any number of things.  Whenever Satan can get people's minds off of the Lord and focussed upon worldly things then they are in trouble.  When a person's mind is so concentrated upon something to the exclusion of everything else that is obsession.

If all a person can do day in and day out is dream of that thing or activity, than they are in trouble with obsession and preoccupation.  Seeking out a person of the clergy is highly recommended to help elevate the problem.  Christian Counseling can go along way is helping a person to learn how to deal with things like this. Through Biblical Scripture a person can learn how to face problems in the future once they have learned how to deal with their problems now.
